Why Travel Insurance Still Matters

Why Travel Insurance Still Matters

One of the most common things I hear is,
“We don’t need travel insurance — our credit card covers it.”

And sometimes it does cover part of the trip. But part of it and comprehensive protection are not the same thing.

That is why I always encourage my clients to look a little more closely before assuming they are fully covered.

For me, travel insurance is not about fear. It is about helping my clients protect the time, money, and energy they have invested in their trip. When you are spending significantly on flights, cruises, tours, safaris, or custom itineraries, it makes sense to make sure you have the right level of protection in place.

Not all travel insurance is the same. Coverage can vary significantly from one policy to another, which is why I choose to work with Manulife. I find it to be a strong, quality product with options that go well beyond basic emergency medical coverage. Depending on the plan selected, coverage can include trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel disruption, baggage protection, and additional support when travel does not go to plan.

An important distinction is that through Travel Like Jenny, my clients also have access to Manulife’s Premium Protection Plan and Non-Medical Premium Protection Plan, both available exclusively through a travel advisor. For travellers looking for a more comprehensive level of protection, these plans can offer meaningful added value. The Premium Protection Plan also includes access to StandbyMD, a 24/7 global medical support service.

I also like practical benefits that help travellers in the moment. With many participating Manulife plans, travellers can register eligible flights for Manulife Flight Assistance. If there is a qualifying delay or cancellation, they may receive a text notification and a real-time Interac e-transfer payment — a small but very tangible benefit when a travel day suddenly goes sideways.

The bottom line is simple: your credit card may cover some things, but that does not always mean it covers enough.

To me, travel insurance is not an afterthought. It is part of travelling well-prepared. And for the right trip, having the right coverage in place can make all the difference.

If you are unsure what level of coverage makes sense for your travels, I am always happy to talk it through with you.

“I don’t think a safari is really my thing.” And I get it! For a lot of people, a safari brings up images of long, dusty days, basic camps, early mornings, and ticking animals off a list. It can feel a little overwhelming… and honestly, not very “you.” But here’s the part that most people don’t realize: That version of a safari is only one version. And it is very rarely the one I design for my clients. It’s not only about the Big Five.

I first travelled with Lindblad on the National Geographic Endurance for 23 nights to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands — and it was incredible. It’s one of those trips that stays with you. What stood out to me wasn’t just the destinations, although the wildlife and landscapes were extraordinary. It was the whole experience — the learning, the people, the expedition team, the crew, and honestly the food. Everything felt thoughtful and very well done. I didn’t want the journey to end.
